Local Dentist Dazzles National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association With Magic Mouth Guard: New technological wonder bringing performance to new levels
A local dentist is turning heads in the world of professional basketball with a new piece of high-tech wizardry called The Edge.
At a recent meeting with the National Basketball Athletic Trainers’ Association (NBATA), local neuromuscular dentist, Dr. David May, met with trainers of all levels to demonstrate how the science behind The Edge has helped a number of players in the NBA, along with countless professional athletes in other sports.
The Edge, a sophisticated mouth guard invented by a Canadian Dentist, is scientifically designed to help athletes increase their strength, flexibility, and balance. Many of the NBA trainers at the NBATA meeting raved about the results they have seen in their players. Basketball isn’t the only sport where The Edge has taken off: the appliance is used by stars such as Boston Red Sox slugger, Manny Ramirez and St. Louis Rams kicker, Josh Brown.
“I am overjoyed to be working with great athletes in all sports, and it was a thrill to meet with all of these top basketball trainers,” says Dr. May. “It is great to get feedback from the trainers because they are the ones who really monitor an athletes performance. They literally make note of the most subtle differences.”
Dr. May, who operates from offices in Hemet and Redondo Beach, says that the success behind The Edge is due to a lot of research into human physiology.
The secret?
“Jaw position is everything,” he says. “If the jaw and neck muscles aren’t relaxed, the rest of the body is adversely effected. 90% of the population has an overbite, which means that most of the time, people have tension problems. They are working against muscle tension without even being aware of it.”
